Catholic Match Brings Mercy to Gulf Coast and Beyond

As Hurricane Katrina ravaged the Gulf Coast and leveled the great city of New Orleans the CatholicMatch.com community watched with the rest of America in sadness. In the outpouring of national generosity to the fallen region, CM decided to its marshal its resources and enable its members to assist in the relief effort. The result was a membership drive to raise money for victims of the hurricane, a truck with supplies sent down to Mississippi, and the creation of “The Mercy Page,” an area for members to coordinate relief efforts.

Pittsburgh, PA (PRWEB) September 22, 2005 -- As Hurricane Katrina ravaged the Gulf Coast and leveled the great city of New Orleans the CatholicMatch.com community watched with the rest of America in sadness.

Catholic Match staff worked closely with St. Thomas Catholic Church in Hattiesburg, MS to distribute the many donated items. Many members donated funds while all those who joined CM or who renewed their membership through the special Katrina promotion saw their fees go to purchase supplies that were transported down south. Everything from bottled water and toothbrushes to baby formula and diapers were transported on a truck whose use was also donated.

In an effort to promote the spiritual and corporal works of mercy, “The Mercy Page,” (http://mercy.catholicmatch.com) was created. CM’s Gulf State membership were able to log in and tell members what they needed. The rest of the membership could quickly identify these in need and support them with material assistance and prayer.

The Mercy Page is not just for the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina but will remain a part of Catholic Match after New Orleans and the Gulf Coast have been rebuilt. CM intends to keep this resource alive to facilitate works of charity. The late pope, John Paul II, taught that mercy has a communal character, as well as an individual one. “The Mercy Page” will continue to use technology to make it easier to feed the hungry, give drink to thirsty and clothe the naked.
